Hi All,

Here is a little present for McDex devotees. It's a McDex eyef*ck maniped from a screen cap from 0316 The Game. You can see what it looks like by looking at my icon for this post. Although it is from the 2nd half of S3, it's just two guys standing together, so it won't give anything away if you are avoiding spoilers.

While I have done many photo modifications before (contrast/hue/sat/whatever adjustments and creative cropping), this is my first ever actual manipulation (where I actually cut out and moved objects around in the picture, modified the background, etc.). I'd be interested in any concrit from more knowledgeable manipers out there as appropriate.

This manip was done using Photoshop Elements 5.0 (one of my whoo hoo Christmas presents!). I've used Photoshop Elements 2.0 before and liked it a lot, but 5.0 blows that away - it's incredible, and extremely reasonably priced at US$99.99.

I chose this particular cap to manipulate because I really like the way Ronon is looking at Rodney - he's hunched down so as to have his own eyes on a level with Rodney's, to look at him more directly, eliminating their usual +/- 5-1/2" of height difference for this moment of connection. This pic will hopefully inspire me to finally finish Part 3/3 of Cave Man and move the Long Dark Road AU on to my patient beta reader who agreed to beta back sometime in November of 2006 (hi an_kayoh! [GRIN])!

Also, this is my first time posting an actual image to LJ, other than 100x100 userpics, so if it doesn't show up, or looks crazy, please let me know (and also let me know how to fix it!).

Hope you enjoy it! Feel free to grab, please credit if used. Best, chev

I tried several times, but it won't let me see the image with that link. I'm not sure what the problem might be.

I had the permission set to McDex, but I've now set it to Public, so please try again and see what happens! Thanks! Best, chev

Great picture.

As for having it locked, what probably happened is that you didn't post the picture to McDex, just the announcement and link. The actual picture was locked in your journal.

I've posted pictures and icons directly to McDex and that usually works, too.

Thanks for sharing.

Yep, the pic was locked for McDex in my Journal. Thanks for your pointers - always helps to hear from the experienced hands! Best, chev

Big, yes, well, you know we like 'em big (wink wink)! Glad you liked it. As for size, I like it big enough to fill my screen at decent resolution, so, thought I'd share it the same way! Can't have the boys being all pixel-y, after all. Best, chev

I wanted to ask, could I use this manip in my March Calendar as long as I give you credit for the manip? I'd appreciate it and I think several others would love the opportunity to look at it all month.

I would be greatly honored to be a small part of your ongoing Great Calendar Project! Thanks for asking! I note ladymarra gave me some pointers to try in regard to blending, though, so let me have a whack at that, then hopefully I'll be able to provide you a more polished image. I'll be in touch as soon as I've had a go at it. Best, chev

That's great! I'll keep an eye open if you change it, but I like it the way it is, too. I appreciate you allowing me to use it.

Really cool manip, the only thing that cought my eye were the hard borders between Background and the portrayed persons. A small tip here is the smudge tool, but it in the smalest brush you feel comfortable with, soom in and smudge the borders a bit. This way the odd feeling of a too sharp border vanishes and the eye thinks the two layers of background and front always belonged together. ;)

Thanks for logging back in to tell me, and thanks so much for the pointers! I was wrestling with what to do about the edge thing. If you look closely, you can see where I added some lighter color along the edge of Rodney's jacket near Ronon's arm, trying to give a sense of roundness. I also touched up Ronon's arm a bit, but I was afraid to do anything near the faces.

I will definitely give the smudge tool a go. Do you have a particular brush and pixel width that you find works well for this smudge effort? For about how many pixels wide do you smudge the edge?

And since you have bravely revealed yourself as someone more Photoshop knowledgeable than me, would you mind if I picked your big 'ole brain for more? For example, what settings do you use for extracting objects? I tried Magic Extractor, but didn't seem to get any better results than with simple brush selection and cut. Now, since I've had a grand total of one image I've tried this on, I'm hardly qualified to make judgments on these things. I'm sure there are settings and techniques galore to make this easier for the more truly Photoshop literate out there.

Thanks for letting me photo-geek at you! Best, chev

I clicked the link before I checked to see which episode you got your stills from, and thought that you got them from Monday's episode ("Vengence"), because Ronon wears the exact same shirt. Heh.

Lovely manip. I am sure that someone will come along and beg it off of you. = D

Ah, yes, the Shirt. Well, you know, ex-Runner and all, Ronon probably hasn't really gotten into the whole laundry thing again too much as yet, so we do tend to see him in the same clothes! [GRIN!]

Glad you liked the manip! I have indeed already been honored by requests, which I was more than happy to grant. As noted in the Journal posting, the image is free for the grabbing, I just ask for credit if its used for something. Thanks for your comments! Best, chev

I know! He's been there for ages, so there's really no reason for him not to have new clothes. I've also figured that you just doesn't want them.

I knew that you would! How many people can resist the Ronon/Rodney love? I would say many who came by to have a look. But of course! Credit is love. = D
